North Carolina's Hog Waste Project For Heal The World

As part of one of WPI's project-based classes, my four-person team and I tasked ourselves with coming up with a feasible solution to North Carolina's hog waste issue. We concluded that a physical solution for waste disposal must be coupled with an economical one in order for the plan to succeed. Because of this, we selected thermal gasification as a reasonable mechanical solution and a "water safe" certification/label as an economic solution. Farmers that use "water safe" practices could label their pork with the water safe label giving it more value to an environmentally-conscious consumer.

Introduction to Computer Aided Design

Over the course of the Solidworks class at WPI you end up modeling somewhere around 25 objects or assemblies, here are just two of them:

Rollerball Machine

Special Fastener

Sophomore Year:

American Ninja Warrior Task For Stress Analysis:

As part of my stress analysis class we were tasked with designing and evaluating a challenge for the American Ninja Warrior competition. Despite losing two team members we were ultimately successful even if our work is a little more messy than it should be.

Sterling Engine for ME1800 Manufacturing Science, Prototyping, and Computer Controlled Machining

ME1800 is WPI's introductory CNC machine class, a large portion of the class revolves around constructing a sterling engine using Haas mini-mills and lathes and the Esprit CAM software. Students generate, simulate, and run their own tool paths with the direction of the TA's and professor.

This part held up the sterling engine off the base, I generated the tool paths in Esprit and machined it on a Hass mini-mill.

They had us machine these little snow men the first week that it snowed on the Haas lathes.

Junior Year:

ME 3902 (Engineering experimentation)

One of our first labs was discovering the accuracy of hobby-grade ultrasonic and infrared light distance sensors

We also did a concentration lab where we made and calibrated a breathalyzer

The final project of the class is a project of your choosing as long as it meets certain base requirements. I chose to make a machine to mix someone a coldbrew coffee if they put their cup inside it. I programmed and assembled the hardware that senses a cup with an IR sensor and then dispenses a specified amount of 3 different liquids. It has a feature where it can sense if the cup is removed prior to the drink being dispensed it stops to prevent spillage.

Here you can see the normal operation of the dispenser except with just water.

IQP (Interactive Qualifying Project)

What is IQP?

"Unlike an academic course, this nine-credit-hour requirement involves students working in teams, with students not in their major, to tackle an issue that relates science, engineering, and technology to society. Sustainability serves as a common theme for IQPs, many of which address problems related to energy, environment, sustainable development, education, cultural preservation, and technology policy." -https://www.wpi.edu/academics/undergraduate/interactive-qualifying-project

Professional proposal

Essentially we would be interviewing decision-makers in New Zealand about how they are preventing and preparing for climate then analyzing those solutions to bring that knowledge back to the USA.
